Strabismus is the medical term used when the eyes are not aligned.  When an eye turns in it is an esotropia;
when an eye turns out, it is an exotropia.  If an eye turns up or down, it is referred to as a vertical strabismus.  
Depending on the patients age and severity of the eye turn, the strabismus could cause
amblyopia in younger
patients or indicate a more serious underlying health problem in adults.
