What Is Vision Therapy?

Look for these signs and symptoms
Common visual behaviors in children that need an
eye exam and possibly vision therapy are listed
below.
One eye turns in or "drifts" out. This is significant
even if it only happens on occasion. It is critical
that these children have their eyes evaluated
Turns or tilts head to see
Skips and rereads words
Uses finger to read
Excessive blinking or squinting
Poor copying skills from the board
Frequently bumps into things or drops things
Frequently loses place when reading
Squinting or closing of one eye
Complains of blurred vision when reading / writing
Reports words "run together" or "jump around"
Fatigues easily or rubs eyes when reading
Only being able to read for short periods of time
Headaches, eyestrain, or tearing with visual tasks
Avoids close work
WHAT IS VISUAL-PERCEPTUAL TESTING?
Visual-perceptual testing is a series of tests that
determines how your child processes vision. These
tests also evaluate eye-hand coordination skills. This
testing is done by our occupational therapist (OT)
Rebecca Collins, MS, OTR/L. Rebecca determines if
there are any visual-perceptual deficits or sensory /
motor issues which impact the students ability to function
in school.
IS VISION THERAPY ONLY FOR CHILDREN?
No. Many teens and adults can benefit from VT. The
approach with older patients is often easier and more
direct since they are capable of understanding the
purpose of the therapy and are therefore more results
driven. Sometimes, therapy for an adult may be
something as simple as a program (Home Therapy
Systems - HTS) to put on your home computer to do
your daily therapy. If you find yourself experiencing
some of the symptoms listed above, tell Dr. Waldorf
about it and he can help determine if a VT program is
right for you.
WILL MY INSURANCE PAY FOR VISION THERAPY?
Unfortunately, many insurance carriers will not pay for
vision therapy. It is best to contact your insurance
before services start to determine if they will cover the
expenses. We will gladly submit the insurance claim for
you, however, if the claim is denied, you will be
responsible for payment.
WHAT IS "AT HOME" VISION THERAPY?
Rebecca Collins can either perform vision therapy on
your child in our office or at your home to accommodate
your busy schedule. There is a travel fee (usually $10 -
$20) that you must pay to Rebecca at each visit. This
fee cannot be submitted to insurance for reimbursement
and varies from patient to patient depending on the
distance Rebecca has to travel.
Parent / Teacher Checklist
One in four school children (approximately 12.1
million) have some form of a vision problem. An
estimated 1 in 20 preschoolers has reduced
vision due to amblyopia (lazy eye). Amblyopia
can result from strabismus (crossed eye) or from
a large uncorrected refractive error
(farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism).
If amblyopia is left untreated, it can lead to a life
of reduced vision in the affected eye. With early
detection and treatment, the chance for having
normal vision is excellent.
Potential problems with your
child's eyesight
How do I proceed if I think my child has a
problem?
First your child needs to have a general eye exam.
If it appears that your child has a problem that is
impacting function, then an evaluation called a Visual
Efficiency Evaluation (VEE) is performed. The VEE
specifically breaks down and quantifies existing
vision problems. A plan of action is then determined
and implemented with regards to therapy for your
child.
